Try Dronfields, they break only mercs but they are not particularly cheap in my opinion. I am only about 5 miles from them so sometimes call in for prices but they also do loads of mail order. In fact I spoke to them this afternoon about a prop for my lwb sprinter. They want £125 per section for my 3 piece prop (I assume plus VAT) so £375 + vat for a secondhand prop that IS NOT RARE, they must break around a 100 sprinters every year, the yard is packed with them.

I usually end up buying new genuine or reconditioned parts as the small additional cost buys peace off mind and a guarantee.

Keep your eyes peeled on t'ebay for anyone breaking a w124.
Also keep calling in on your local breakers, and try other specialsit merc breakers like MercMan.

If you have any industrial estates close by, or metalworking places, perhaps you could get a large sheet of aluminium and make one up? All you'd need is tinsnips, a flat edged file, and a drill. Just get them to cut you a sheet thats roughly the correct size. Then you line the inside of it with fireproof foam for noise insulation, and drill a few drainage holes.

I've no real idea what ali costs btw.

Cheers for all that
Good thinking with the DIY, might give that one a go.

Looking underneath the car the torque convertor is really exposed to flying bricks, rabbits and anything else that could get thrown up under there. I really think it needs some kind of protection, or am I being stupid.

dont run over rabbits.. its cruel!
i remove these from my vans to make on road repairs easier.
i think theyre only good for catching dropped spanners and nuts.

I have considered taking them off my van, the 2 together weigh a fair bit and payload = money (or fines!). My only concerns are a possible increase in fuel consumption due to the loss of the smooth underside and an increase in dirt on the mechanical bits, even after 130k behind the undertrays still looks tip top. (just remembered, most of the bits are new!)
