I am putting this on as a guide for any one else who cant afford or just dont want to pay mb prices....i used to work for a volvo dealers so i have some knowledge and like to get my hands dirty. also before i start a job i will always look at the job in hand before starting ..as the saying goes measure twice cut once....

the a class has a removable crumple zone at the front .

1..disconnect battery
2..remove the bumper 6 bolts
3..take out the head lights 2 bolts each
4..unclip bonnet catch , unthread through cross member , take of plastic trim held on with 4 push in clips.
5..drain radiator , undo hoses, disconnect fan, radiator is held on with two plastic clips take out.
6..undo bolts on slam panel 3 on either side just above headlights..and 3 on cross member.
7.. undo crossmember 5 bolts either side holding it onto the chassis.
8..take off water bottle.
9..unscrew ecu 3 posi screws to air filter ( PUT IT SAFE).
10..tap the air filter box gently from the right and it will come away to the left.
11..undo heater hoses from the bulk head.
12..undo the steering column ( mark position of column it does help).
13..gear lever cables hold and twist where they are held down and theywill pull away , then they can be unclipped of the gear selector , unplug reverse gear light plug.
14..undo the 2 bolts on top of each leg .
15..jack up the car and put on axle stands block back wheels..
16..take off the front wheels.
17..remove the brake calipers .
18..sensors on the wheels unclip halfway up the wheel arch.
19..undo all plastics under the engine.
20..now jack up the engine just to take the weight .
21..undo subframe bolts 4 either side there are two smaller bolts at the back of the subframe .
22..undo exhaust.
23..slowly lower engine .. NOT ALL THE WAY.. MAKE SURE IT IS BLOCKED UP SAFELY BEFORE GETTING UNDER THE CAR...
24..unclip the hydraulic pipe going into the gear box then unclip it from the master cylinder quickly lift it out and reclip it back into the master cylinder so the end is higher than the cylinder do not bend the pipe
25..undo wires on the back of the sump , starter and alternator.
26..lower engine completly now pull forward and out....

PLEASE USE THIS AS A GUIDE ONLY MY CAR IS A 1999 A CLASS A140 ,AND AS SUCH HAD A PREVIOUS OWNER SO SOME PARTS COULD BE MISSING SO THIS IS NOT GOSPEL ALWAYS CHECK ALL WIRES AND PIPES HAVE BEEN REMOVED BEFORE LOWERING FULLY SO YOU DO NOT SNAP OR BREAK SOMETHING IMPORTANT...HAVE FUN

Well done! Although I've never removed headlights. Don't forget about fuel pipes.

Hi
Well done for the very detailed writeup.
Where are you ?

Do you have any sideways play in the rear suspension arm .

Hi
What I am not sure is whether the play is in the shock absorber bolt or the bearings at the top of the arm.
Have you done any work in this area.

Chain her down

Well written, just a thought, but if the engine removal is carried out "raised" on a two post ramp or even on 4 axle stands, be aware that the engine-less car will fall over backwards. There is a factory tool to attach the body to a ramp, or use chain/straps that can take the weight.
Good site. Ive only just joined. Need to explore more.
