Your radiator valve opens too early, replace it.

I used to put some cardboard in front of ½ the rad and it worked wonders in the winter months

The engine thermost is faulty and sticking open or partialy open, replace it and change the coolant or you will eventualy end up with very expensive damage to the piston rings and bores leading to increased oil consumption and destruction of the cat (and any replacement cats).

The lower engine temperature will also make for a noticable increase in fuel consumption especialy in winter.

It will cost about £30 for the parts and you will get that back on fuel savings in no time.

hi,
i have problems with heating in the car and wondered if OP's problem might be related to mine.

I just got my W203 this week, I have a 1 hr drive to work and on each occasion of my drive to (and from) work there is a problem heating my car. I also noticed that the engine temperature just about makes it to the 60 mark by the time i'm almost at work.

advice welcome

Petrol or diesel? If diesel is the pre-heater working?
For now, follow Malcolms (Television) advice and cut yourself a piece of cardboard.

I'm basically turning 2 central knobs to 26, full and putting a fan on 6

The pre heater is an fuel or electric heater that fits onto the engine, thats helps to heat up the water, many diesels have them fitted,,,quite a few post just a few days ago on this subject

So you're taking as much heat as possible out of the engine by running the heater like that. It will take longer to heat up because of that, but I'm not saying you don't have a problem.

I'd slow the fan down, and set the temp a little lower. See if that makes any difference.

thanks for that dave robbo....
I was praying this would solve my issue this morning on drive to work, but still no joy......(i kept my fan on low, 2 mark, and temp knobs at about 19/20), engine temperature barely getting above 60, but 50 mins on and it will rise a bit past that)

i'll look into this pre-heater thing now maybe and see if it throws up anything

Change your thermostat. It's only £36 from main dealer, cheaper at Euro Car Parts. Easy job although access can be a bit tight.

Hi Blaky ! How much anti freeze did you loose when you changed yours? I'm going to have a go with mine thanks to TV's guidance .
Did you experience any other difficulty whilst changing the thermostat?

Take care with the little pipe on the housing,,you should not lose much antifreeze, it is not far off the same level as the header tank

Hi Janice321,

I took the opportunity to totally drain down and replace the coolant when I did mine.

As I mentioned, the job is very straightforward, - you may want to get some spare hose clips just in case. Undoing the 3 off T10 bolts on the housing I found the fiddliest.

Report back on your progress and good luck.

Chris.
