Hi All.
There's a longish black tube between front of the engine and rad on my 220te that looks like a shock absorber.? It seems to be busted and rattles like mad while engine warms up - what is it, and if it is busted and there's no obvious vibration from engine (which there isn't), do I need it?

Engine Shock absorber

I had an old 230 saloon which had knocking sound from the engine bay when idling. It turned out to be the little shock absorber on the driver's side of the engine bay and was quite easy to replace ;) .

I think it is there to resist movement when the engine is started. Without it you will probably soon be replacing your engine mounts if they haven't already sheared.

in FRONT of the engine? are you sure this isnt the idle roller damper - for the fan belt?

Can be a pig to replace as you might have to take off the fan - have a look at the bottom bolt - is it 'clear' of the fan? if it is - its very easy to replace - just undo the bolts and stick a new one in

assuming 220TE means 124 series (1990ish) its 111 200 04 14 part number

OK?

I had a damperchanged on my c class made loads of difference, it is not that hard to do although i was lazy and had my mechanic do mine, but the damper will cost you around £40 from dealer. I would recommend changing it if your engine is making more noise than usual....

220TE 1993 Polybelt idler damper rattle

Greetings,

Have found this thread and seems to confirm my suspicions that it is a damper and not a spring tensioner. It is this which is loose on my 220TE and I am sure is causing the rattle (a great relief in my second month of ownwership, believe me). The rattle coming from the bottom mounting bolt.

So if it is a damper, then it should not be difficult to change. Can anyone advise on the design of the bottom mounting bolt? It feels like an Allen bolt with the head pointing aft (rear of the car).

Also I would like to change the polybelt at the same time.

My question is, how is the polybelt tensioned? I can not see that if the idler was providing the tension, why should the idler be allowed to move and require a damper.

Could anyone be able to advise on renewal of polybelt?

The engine is apparently the later E220 which replaced the 230.

So in the first month of ownership I have renewed the heater fan motor £88 with next day delivery form local Bosch agent. This died a few days after I bought the car and discovered rain leaking into the front passenger foot well. I think I have cured the leak but waiting for more rain.

Also replaced front anti-roll bar bushes as recommended by Nick Frome at
W124.com (thanks Nick), £20 only for bushes and made all the difference in the world.

Also new ignition key, amazing to be able to obtain an exact replacement from MB and just £10.

Well these are just a few of the little things to do to restore her to the quiet dignity such a well engineered vehicle deserves. I have never driven a more pleasurable car, never mind thirteen years old. Oh, and she goes like hell if need be.

Many thanks. Graham.

Malcolm,
Once again thanks for a brilliant site. You gave me the site for the original spec a while back, which was also good.

So, the idler pully has to come off first before the lower damper bolt, I think. It's dark and raining so will check tomorrow.

I still need to know how to release the belt tension and, importantly how to re-tension.

Many thanks again.
Graham.
