Love my 95 E200 auto estate to bits, but would like either more grunt or more torque, or both. Am I nuts to think about swapping the engine in favour of a 3 litre diesel or one of the six cylinder petrols? Seems there are a reasonable number of nicley maintained saloons that could be plundered if this is an easy swap...

Considered this myself but I think you'd be better off in the long run selling the 200 and buying a 320. I dont think the diesel W124's will be any quicker than your 200 - torque yes but grunt, no.

Don't forget, its not just the engine but the loom, ECU and electronic ancilliaries plus exhaust, manifold and injectors, to name a few. Also, just think what your insurance company would say at renewal time... I betcha it would hurt your wallet a great deal more than a factory built 320.
