Given the rust problems with the W210 is there any reason why a 210 engine and box (say 300 diesel or even 270) couldn't be put into a W124? What mods if any would be required?

Given that they are entirely different and that these engines were never fitted to the 124, I'd imagine it would be a massive undertaking. Clearly the looms would be different, then there are the engine mounting points, the exhaust, the positioning of anciliaries and radiators, electronics, pipework etc. Also, the 210 boxes were 5 speed electronic, whereas 124s are 4 speed units ... big job, even the gear shift levers are differerent.

Thanks - silly idea, I guess. I assumed the 300 W210 diesel engine was the same as the multivalve W124 and quite liked the idea of a 5 speed auto box ( like my E320 cabrio!). but sure, there's a whole lot of other things to consider!

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
No reason why the 300td (om606) won't go in a W124. You might have issues with the turbo, and the electronics would also be an issue.

Bear in mind that W124's aren't exactly rust-free.
