Thinking of puchasing a late 1992 K-reg 320TE from a colleague at work. According to various US based Mercedes forums, there is a known problem with the engine wiring harnesses produced from about 1992 to 1995. Problem is poor insulation which breaks down and then causes shorting, and all manner of electrical problems.

I would assume that UK cars are susceptible to this, but haven't found any thread on this forum to confirm/deny this.

Advice welcome.

Wiring Harness

You've got it right! There is definately a problem with the insulation on these harnesses and the replacement is $895.00. I was advised of the problem a little over a year ago on my 1995 C280. The dealer told me that MBUSA would stand behind the part and replace it if I would pay for the labor (about $220). I told them I would take care of it in my next visit. It was about 11 months before I went back to the dealer (the harness had not given me any problems) This time, the dealer said it's offer had been withdrawn and MBUSA would only pay 25% toward the part. I asked for reconsideration. The Zone Rep upheld the withdrawal of the offer. I emailed Customer Service, they said they would stand behind the dealer. I called the dealer again and advised them that MBUSA Customer Service said they would stand behind the dealership decision. The dealership said the MB Zone rep would not let them pay more than 25%. I wrote the President of MBUSA. His rep called me today to say they would not stand behind their earlier promise to stand behind the part.

If you have not bought this Mercedes,,,,Run!!! Buy something else .

Sidpick: The M-B warranty dance. M-B stand behind customer service who stand behind the dealer who stand behind the factory who stand behind one of the others ........and the buck stops at the customer's feet. Now, did not Mitsubishi get caught out badly with a similar dance before M-B bought a lot of it? (and knocked down the price because of it?) The idea is profitable.
