I don't know that because I don't drive a bus or truck. I am going to drive a truck.

hi,
does anyone know if this is for post '91? drivers as i kept my rights to drive over 3.5 tons and minibuses when the rules changed around this time. according to dvla -
'How to renew your entitlement
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will send you, 56 days before the expiry of your driving entitlement, a D47P ‘application for renewal of lorry and bus entitlement’ and a D4 ‘medical examination report’.

well they haven't sent me notification of expiry of entitlement, and i'm over 45 and me motorhome is 4.8 ton. i thought it was only needing renewal at 65.

Well I had my 7 ton bit until I returned from Sweden in 1996, and I used a truck to move myself,,when I applied for an exchange license this facility was not there but I did not notice until this subject first came up a few years ago

so now as a trucker who is above 45 you need to pay for:-

1 a photocard picture every 10 years £17 + cost of photo
2 a medical, can be had for 35 but BMA scale fee is £110, every 5 years
3 a digi card for the digital tachograph , only to drive post 06 vehicles £48 renewable every 5 years @ 18
4 a CPC card (certificate of professional competance) required immdeiately for candidates who pass their truck test after September next year, and for existing drivers by 2014. sorry cant remember costs.

dont start me on the fuel duty!
+new truc is mot ed frm end of first year

for all this you will work all hours at a small margin above the min wage.

After sept assuming a candidate passes all tests first time he/ she will have spent £450.00, just in test fees, without paying anythingfor training!!!!!

You shouldnt have lost your 7.5t entitlement, uless you had a medical condition shuch as dibetes cotrolled by insulin injection, poor sight, excess blood pressure.

you might be able to get it reinstated.

Go to www.direct.gov.uk,then click on 'motoring' (haven't tried to do links yet).Sorry.It looks quite complex now.Wasn't it a lot more user friendly a few years ago? I've got a HGV and PSV class1-I know they're not called that now,but all drivers I know still call them that.djb, I thought a digicard was £28-may well be wrong, though. It's an expensive occupation to be in right now.Glad I only tried it for a (good) while.Great job,though-especially doing Euro.

EDIT: Sorry,that looks like a link,but isn't.

Do I need all that just to hire a truck for a couple of days just to move home?

It doesn't depend on why or how long you need the truck for,it depends on the gross weight of the vehicle.

if a 7.5 t and you have entitlement , no for medical until 65 yes for digi card if it is fitted with a digi tacho. It is illegal to drive a digi truck without having a digi card. It doesnt have to be in though! (to cover when a driver loses one)

if you dont have entitlement , yes test etc has to be done & medical if over 45.

few firms here will rent7.5t vehicles to members of the public.

if moving house withlarger than 7.5t, a class 2 licence needs to be held, with all those costs !

I occasionally hired 7.5 T through my business and it was only when I became friendly with one of the hiring managers that he explained if you are a business you need an operator's licence even if you hire one only for a few days!!
