You've read it all before.
There's loads on the net about this problem and it never seems easy to diagnose or fix...
Anyone wanna play?..lol

So an old car now..W220 S320CDI '05

Not losing coolant, no noticable leaking at injectors by eye however it had been a bit lumpy on acceleration whilst warming up so i treated it to a bottle of redex fuel cleaner which did seem to help....
2 months later i accelerate hard and it goes into limp mode. After i stop, turn off key and get going again its running fine but i notice some smoke and get hit by EPC visit workshop and engine light on.
Change fuel filter and these warnings go for a few days as does the white smoke..but a bit smoky returns intermittently but not too noticeable and clears once on the move
As im sort of winning i decided to give it an oil change with oil filter and air filter too and clean the egr valve which was only sooty as it turned out..
Boom...epc and engine light back on and now billowing smoke, enough to make me a youtube star by electric car driver with dashcam.lol..and stinks of diesel outside the car...which im hoping proves i didnt put petrol in it..

So i'll be booking a Star session but at the mo im just guessing what it could be...

Goosed injector or faulty control of same wud be my guess, any codes related to fuel system, is it common rail? Get access to decent code reader.

***Fixed***

.... i drove it the next morning just to see, and there was no smoke but EPC fault and engine light still on..after a few turning offs and on and pressing the reset button they disappeared too...
So im going with fuel problem all along...
I had ran it down to the orange fuel light a couple of times but id also brimmed the tank a couple of times recently also.
The fuel injector cleaner probably done its job and maybe shifted loadsa crap from the tank through the system and clogged the fuel filter.
Changing the fuel filter fixed it for a couple of days but then smoke was back intermittently and even though mainly white i got a blue tinge
After i had done the service with egr clean it billowed a plume of white smoke so bad i couldnt see the cars behind but did clear to just puffing a bit of smoke out and then the bit i dont get..parked it up for the night....drove it to work early hours cos id be closer and not at home to get recovered to a merc indie but the smoke was not there....and it was driving like a dream..still is

Thats my story..hope it helps someone in their diagnosis of a smokey merc

Maybe injector stuck open, and a run plus "cleaner" shifted issue. Either way, if ur sticking with benz get yrself icarsoft mb v3 it will answer many q, s and save you plenty.

i have read about icarsoft, sounds like a good idea...
and will be sticking with MB with this one and others...

personally i love the OM 648 straight6 engine and this car has been the most reliable.
if old diesels dont get killed off in years to come and are allowed to be run as classics then this is my plan for this one
