error codes for 1988/9 190e ?

With a car that was fitted with the early round socket with only 9 (?) pins in it, is there a source of codes/hardware/software that would be useful to acquire ?
I'm envious, needless to say, of owners of later vehicles with hundreds of data codes from OBD2, but I hope I can learn something from my smaller output.

Thanks BlackC55. I've done quite a search, but could only find reference to an old manual, not a device.

Re the codes themselves, I see them mentioned in ebay adverts for workshop manuals on dvd/cds.
Are these worth getting anyway, in addition to Haynes, which I have ?
