this evening opend the boot, shut it, drove away and the rear boot light (2 x side and tailgate) and rear passenger lights were on. checked doors and boot shut still on. locked unlocked car....you guessed it, still on.

I believe that the switch is built into the closing assist ass.

I will look it up later in the morning and I should be able to send you the instructions

I'm not sure that the S210 had closing assist as an option, have you looked at the plunger on the rear door? On the saloons you could pull it towards you to switch off the interior lights during extended loading. Not sure if you have the same option on the estate however I would be looking at that switch first.

Yes this was an option and I have been there before, the interior light switch is built into the door lock ass.

Malcolm has it by the ears

and as I remember from the 124, it's impoosibly fiddly to change the microswitch on the assembly unless you are some kind of electronics genius. Easier to replace the whole assembly for a know to be good one.

yup, has close assist, and no all the switches are off - you are right to raise it tho:)

If I have close assist, assume I do not have a plunger as I could not find, so I guess Myros you're right regarding the the microswitch.

any diagrams on how to remove which part of the lock (body of car or tailgate ?? and how to remove ??

Cheers to all for help so far.

1999 S210 E240, my first Merc. Rusty but I love it!!
Would it also be worth checking the rear doors as well? I had a rear window regulator go on my S210, and I was driving around with the door panel off while I was awaiting the new parts to come in. The rear lights stayed on until the regulator and panel were refitted.

quick update, the indie, did the brake work (different post) cleaned the contacts, replaced a bulb and now all is working. He admits it wouldn't have been what he did and comforted me by saying it was a Merc, they are allowed to be awkward on the electrics every now and then.

must confess - 100% agree :D

Cheers as always to everyones help. Much appreciated.
