Hi

Any ideas peeps as to the cost of replacing the head gasket / skimming head? Car is a 1993 E 300 (Petrol) SOHC 6 3.0L. Would do it myself but have a slipped disk to contend with:(

Only guide I can give is for DOHC 300D which takes 9.25 hours labour according to the MB service manual. At £45/50ish per hour labour you're looking at between £400/500 labour plus parts (not usre what a head gasket costs). Euro car parts quote gaskets from £30 upwards. Hope this is of help.

Head gaskets on the W124 6 cylinder cars normally come in at £800-1000 pounds as it makes sense to have a head overhaul at the same time.

Not nice I know, but if there is any saving grace, its that the replacement haed gaskets have a slight re-design on them that stops them from blowing as quickly as the original :?

S+R Motors just quoted me £565 + VAT to do the head on mine which is a good deal cheaper than I thought it was going to be. Life ain't so bad after all.
Just got tthis from this thread http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=8752 6th post down by LNM, maybe ask him any questions you may have, he probably had a few prices .
Let us know how you get on  GOOD LUCK

If you shop around, you should be able to find someone who can do it cheaper than that.

My specialist replaced the head gasket, re-skimmed it and also fitted new valve stem seals on my previous car (1988 W124 300TE) for around £500.

£650 from your reccommendation of the guys in Formby and £520 from the other recommendation in the same post.

This includes a skim. Just made a post on another topic about this; its been done before by MB and there's NO MENTION MADE OF A ****** SKIM on the receipt.

Tossers.

I've not done mine yet because I can't even drive it round the block without it pressurising so badly that it overheats and ****ES coolant out from the overflow tank drivers side. Poor old goat.

Off now to read my breakdown cover + see if they can give me a lift to the place in Maghull. Auto so I can't tow the sod.

E 300 Cyl Head

All

Many thanks. I originally posted months ago due to finding the dreaded mayonnaise on the dipstick / oil cap. After a 20 min drive it was down to a couple of blobs on the oil filler cap. I drove from work in London to Plymouth for a weekend away and have never seen the dreaded goo since! My only guess is that due to my spine injury I was driving the 1 mile!!! to work. As it was winter, water laden blow by gasses and a lack of oil temperature combined with the cold weather produced the terrifying goo!!

Head gaskets on Mercs don't usually go bang, but when they do they do it big-time. Usually they give you plenty of warning by leaking oil externally before they start leaking oil into water internally.
