If you find yorself locked out of the car, maybe you have spare key in the car or you have lost them and need something out of the car,
Ring home on your moble phone asks some one there to use your spare key and point it to the mike on phone and press unlock while you hold your moble facing the car and hey presto you are in, grab your coat or breifcase and ask them to lock, and that's it. It works fine on my MB

hmmmmmmmmm

as someone with a good working knowledge of electronics could you please explain to us all how you can transmit an infra red beam over a mobile phone?

This tip has been posted on hundreds of web sites and dismissed as an urban myth - if it works on yours you must have a very unique car/key combination :)

My old boss years ago had one of the first cars (MB) that ever had double-glazing, he got locked out and even the RAC/AA couldn't get into this thing even by trying there damnest to get the windows smashed. They had to make a 200mile round trip to get the spare set of keys.

I've noticed that my car locks itself if I unlock it and leave it for a while, I expect I will need to be careful not to ever leave my keys on the car while washing it, etc.

It will only lock itself if it has been unlocked and no doors have been opened, I think mine does it in about 20 seconds.

That's clever then, means it will lock if you accidently hit the button when you put your keys in your pocket.

Sorry about this I withdraw it, I did think about it, and thought it cant be possible. when I tried it from the house to garage the car locked and unlocked, as you all know the range of MB's is quite short, but it does go through walls and rooms, in this case some 15 feet.

Very sorry everyone

Malcolm

I t did work on my friends old Nisson.

the Volvo does not unlock via phone, It uses rolling codes

If the keys are in the ignition how did you get them there without unlocking and opening the door? Or if a second key is involved having been used to lock the 1st set in and then used to unlock the door but not open it........ but then you have a set of keys outside the car so there isn't a problem.

I believe the remote locking is radio not IR, on my T210 anyway. I can lock / unlock my car from within the house and not in sight of of a window.

The old square 'flick' keys were IR, The key shaped ones are both radio and IR. None would work over a phone though and I've never seen a sonic remote aside from the old TV ones which would send my dog scatty.

Try this: get just out of range for your infra red key to work - now put the key up to your ear, look at your car, press the key and see what happens - the car unlocks. This was mentioned on Top Gear a few years ago. I thought it was a joke but it worked on my 300 and CLK although I cannot vouch on what it does to your brain or eyes!!!!!

again this is wrong :)

an infrared key cannot work if there is something solid between it and the target object at the end of the day it's just a beam of light and therefore has to obey the laws of physics.

I think Top Gear did the experiment with a radio key in which case it's possible as your body becomes the "aerial" for the key. there would be no benefit ion looking at it

I too have a keen interest in electronics, and was amazes at televisions original post.

Re the mercedes flick keys or the other non-flick. They have both radio waves and IR.

The doors are not opened by IR (infrared) but by radio waves and thus will penetrate walls.

The IR (infrared) is for the 'comfort' (closing windows/sunroof) setting, and the key must have a direct line of vision to the sensor on the door.

The fact that the IR is the 'comfort' feature probably explains why it is very picky about where I stand and the direction in which I point the key, so much so that I don't bother to use it!

As my key shaped key is. in fact, not a key in the conventional sense how does it work when I put it in the ignition?

I can confirm that using your body as an aerial works, I have to do it some days at work. My W124 has an rf remote to a clifford alarm, and I work in dockyard where lots of radar and other such radio stuff is flying around. Most days it works at shorter range than at home, but some days when they are testing radar etc... I have to use my body as an aerial to get it to arm/disarm.

Cheers,

Richard

Those with Volvo's, if the key is in the ignition, then the second remote does not work and nothing happens.

Re Jberks driving dog mad, that's ultra sonic 22k, that's what they use for cat and badger scaring devices. Some humans though they cant hear 22k feel uncomfortable with these devices, probably a harmonic

My MB standing in free air has a range of 8 feet pointing at the door lock, in the garage I can lock it two rooms away.

With the Volvo standing out at front of house it will lock from back garden
The MB is visable in a camara, the volvo being radio will is not.

Believe it or not, before I put up the post, my head told me it cant work, was this one of those strange things that I had missed. Well I have found out something, but not what I posted, Sorry about that.

I used to be able to hear 22K when I was younger. I was an alarms engineer and at that time we used to use UMDs (Ultrasonic Movement Detectors) I could always tell if one was faulty cos I couldn't hear it.

Problem is that now I'm still hearing them...............I developed tinnitus a few years ago and it's just like listening to the old UMDs!
