Can anyone here let me know what STAR means or STARR in some cases on here with regard to Mercedes? Have seen it on several posts but no explanation and have searched everywhere and several combinations of star, starr, STAR etc...

STAR replaced a previous generation system, so even if your car preceeds year 2,000, all is not lost.

STAR Diagnotics is a notebook (or compact touch screen) based system which allows you to read your cars computers, for diagnostics, configuration, exercising components (such as ABS for brake bleeding) etc.

Its comprised of DAS, WIS, EPC, SD-Flash etc (dont ask me to elaborate on the acronyms)! DAS is the program which interfaces with the cars computer, WIS is the system which holds all details of mercedes cars along with diagrams, procedures for repair etc. EPC is the electronics parts catalogue, no idea what SD-Flash does!

Staggering amount of help- thanks to all of you, just wonder whether this could be run on any laptop with certain cable connections- not that I would bother as I suspect it would all be too expensive to obtain from Mercedes or others and obviously would need a trained techie to diagnose!!
Am a computer hardware/software engineer myself but would not fancy trying to configure the data!!

if you want EPC then you can subscribe to it, this is the link, you will need a VAT number though but any invoice you might have will do.

Now you can also subscribe (to EPC only) as a private user but it appears to cost about €17.50 a year (or GBP equivalent). No VAT number required.
