recently purchased first mercedes. 2000 e200 115000miles auto petrol.

1) when first purchesed the exhaust seemed very noisy on start up and also caused vibrations. the cat was thought to be the problem and was changed on warranty. however problem stills seems to be there. am being told now that cat takes a bit of time to settle thus causing noise.vibration is gone. does this sound right.

2) srs light on dash and air bag light on middle console stays on. garage says that there are no faults being read and that there is a possible trapped wire causing the lights to stay on.

3) finally what are the w and s in the middle console for and which setting should it be on.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum,
1, Could try lose/collapsed baffles in the exhaust boxes, CATs i thought made a tinkling sort of sound when U/S.
2, SRS light is the airbag warning light when this is lit the cars airbag system will not work. I would,nt except the car till this fault is cleared.
3, W setting= Winter (pulls away in 2nd changes gear at lower revs)..
S setting= Summer (Starts in 1st gear changes gear at higher revs).

Hope this has been of some help.

1) No, this doesn't sound right. A new cat should be silent from installation.

2)I would have thought a "trapped" wire would result in a fault showing up. Why else would the light come on unless the system detects an electrical signal?

3) These are operation modes for th auto box. "W" is for "winter" mode, the car moves off in second gear and changes up at lower revs. This gives more "gentle" progress. The car also reverses using a higher gear. "S" is for "Standard" or "Sport" or "Summer" The interpretation changes with year and model for no apparent reason. The are in essence the same mode. The car moves off in 1st gear and changes up at higher revs
