Can anyone tell me the best place (money wise) to shop for an exhaust system downpipe back for a 190e/w201 2.3 16v 1986 (part cosworth engine)

Ultimately it depends on how long you wish to keep the car.
Original MB exhausts seem to last forever, they obviously have more steel in them than aftermarket ones.
In this instance it really is a case of you get what you pay for.

You after the full exhaust system? Does this include cats or are you having straight through pipes instead?

Interesting point. On reflection, I have never replaced a piece of exhaust on a MB and some of the cars have been over 10 years old.

Paradoxically, I was doing an exercise on the aftermarket in the motor trade some years ago examining the lifetime costs of volume production cars. There were 2 peaks in the replacement graph for exhausts - 2.5. years and 6.5 years.

That indicated that OEM exhausts in that group lasted much less well than aftermarket replacements. Curiously, the study was never published?

One of my school friends started off the merrit exhaust center chain, the guarantee was 12k miles or 12 months, what ever came up first, and 99% failed one month out of guarantee , they were all rip off merchants back then
