Hi there folks . . . could I have some help please?

The heater fan on a C180 has stopped working. A couple of weeks ago it started becoming temperamental, in that it would work sometimes and then stop. Occassionally it would just come on again a few minutes after it had stopped. Now it just doesn't come on at all. The fuses are OK so I suspect its either the relay (most likely) or the switch (less likely - still feels like it used to). Is it likely to be the relay and where is it located? Any other tips for a novice to try and locate the problem? - or do I just hand over the car to a main dealer and arrange to have next month's salary paid directly into their account!:(

The car is a 1996 C180 (202 model), petrol.

You do need a volt meter to check where you have power, do you have one.

Interesting, the fan on my W202 C Estate was doing exactly the same thing. Though it did not fail completely. Wind forward a couple of weeks and a rainy night. Water was dripping from bottom of the fan housing due to a blocked rainwater drain near the air intake. On taking the fan apart it looks as if it has been wet for some time without dripping out of the bottom. I've dried it off and lubricated it and it seems to be working OK so far. Not definite that wetness was the cause of my fan problems, but time will tell.

Thank you Malcoln and Kevin for your inputs. I don't have a volt meter, but here's an interesting observation . . . When I turn the blower switch completely off (ie to 0 setting) and leave it say overnight, when I start the car in the morning and switch on the fan it works! I suppose I really need to determine wether the relay is working properly, but can not see where it is located. Any ideas anyone?

Fan not working update . . . . .

Took a the car to the dealer today. They say that there is power coming all the way to the fan motor, so have advised that the motor is changed. £170 +VAT for parts (which has to come from Germany), plus a further 1.5 hours for labour. So its going to be about £350 to keep the windscreen nice and clear during the winter! C'est la vie. Makes you want to buy a Ford, doesn't it? . . . . . .
