at what temperature does the engine fan kick in on a 1998 c180?

80-85c thats the point when the thermo fan should be at full power.

These fans have a visco coupling and normally spin at a slowish speed, all of the time and speed up when the temperature reaches 80c

This would show that the visco coupling has completely failed, I cant give you the link tonight as the site is down, but there are many post here if you do a search C180 fan.

I posted some links last night or this morning on it.

so its completely knackered then?

It looks like it. You could check that the fan has not been modified to an electric clutch. The fan is bolted directly onto the front of the engine, if there are 2 thin wires coming out of the top then it is electric and controlled by the sensor on top at the front of the head.

my fan is on the radiator???????

Damm, just looked at your first post, the last 2 this morning were 1995 this is something else. Right your fan cuts in at 100c with a control module in nearside bumper.

There have been water issues both in the fuse box and with the fan module.

Do check now at 100c and I will go into it further in the morning.

This morning dealt with a 1995 the first C180 and another 1995 car on the same thread. So sorry about that. you have a very different set up.

Even if it is OK you should fit the 2 modified lids on the fuse Relay box under the bonnet. When water gets into the fan module, the low level warning light comes on. we can deal with that later.

I will give you the part numbers later.

There is a small lid and a larger one. the mod is new lids and seals, you could put up the next 3 numbers of your VIN WDB202---

and I will confirm tomorrow as I am off to bed.
