Filled the car up last week, 180 miles later fuel gauge hasn't moved from full !

Either these Mercs are so economical or I have a problem, any ideas ?

C classes do have problems with the fuel tank senders. I thought that by 2000 they'd have sorted it (mine was a '95) but maybe not.
As you say 180 miles and still full and it's certainly not right!
Mine wouldn't go to full so it was less confusing.
Has the same fault on an escort once - got to 1/4 and suddenly became remarkably economical. Finally lost my bottle and put 8.5 gallons into the 8 gallon tank.

I'm assuming your going to top up today. It will be interesting to see how much it takes to fill it up.

It must be a faulty sender.

Sounds a bit iffy to me. However, on my Skoda I could brim the tank and get as far as Stonehenge (80 miles) on the fuel that was above the sender in the filler pipework and neck.

try putting in some Forte Gas Treatment before you replace anything. I have personally found this to remedy fuel gauge problems on 2 of my mercs

Will order the Forte Gas tratment, if that doesn't work I'm assuming its a petrol tank out job to replace the sender ?

Update tonight:

25 mile journey home and the fuel gauge finally moved from the full positon to just under the 3/4 mark.

German engineering eh, reminds me of a 1970's fiat I had in my youth.

That means 205 miles and the gauge is only down to 3/4, every car I have owned wants filling up at 205 miles

What Merc have you got? Sounds like I need to get one!
My 500 Sel does it!!! i fill it up (£70.00 .............Ouch!!) and then the gauge slowly drops to just over half full for ages ...........and i think this is great what an economical car this is............NOT!!! and then Wham!!!!   the fuel light comes on.That would explain the fact that when i bought the car it appeared to have over half a tank of fuel in it??. I have since filled my winscreen washer bottle with a few spare litres just in case i get caught out.

Same as mine, then when it shows 1/4 full, you just have to look away for a minute and the warning light is on!

Most fuel gauges do this.
Look at the BMW gauge, at least the 1980's ones.
They were graduated with the 1st 1/4 of its range covering the 1st 1/2 of the tank, leaving the remaining 3/4 range to cover the other half. This worked remarkably well though why they couldn't just get the sender right I don't know!

I am pleased to report however, that the digital gauges on the newer stuff like the 211 seem to be pretty accurate and fall at a regular rate!

AS Jberks says, they are better now, you can put it on a level with a ball valve in the WC or header tanks in the loft.
The new ones use a vertical float that goes up and down a rod, these will give a linear reading, where as the older ones were like a ball valve system, very inacurate at the full or empty marks, and the half full point lasted for ever.

In the house.
Talking of ball valves, once you have used one of the vertical valves in your toilet or tank ,you would never go back to a ball valve, The new ones are silent, don't drible and fast, also OK for high presure (direct off mains)

My 1996 E200 Fuel gauge is in a different position each time I start the car. When I purchased the car the tank was half full (allegedly). Two days later the warning light came on. the following day I had more than half a tank. 20 miles later the car conked out in the middle of a high street! Ever since then I just fill up around 10 miles after the warning light comes on.

Anyone know how much it costs to replace the sender unit????
