hi, i have recently purchaced a 1998 c250td estate. the problem im having is that sometimes when i open the car and try to turn on the ingnition the key doesnt take the lock off the steering wheel so i cant start the car. what i have to do is lock the car again and then unlock it and usually this works, but not every time. ive tried new batterys in the key but there is no difference and with me only having one key im worried that if this problem gets worse i may be stuck without a car to use.has anyone any ideas on how i can fix this problem? is it the key that needs replacing or the ignition barrell maybe?? any solution would be much appriciated thanks roger.

Hello roger and welcome :D with only one key its impossible to say if it is the key or the ign switch that does not recognize it,, do clean the red lens on the end of the key and open the flap on the ign switch and look down the hole to see if the red lens at the bottom is clean, short of another key its impossible to say more.

When the key is in the ign switch its powered from the car and not the batteries in the remote

hi, thanks for getting back to me. i have cleaned the red lens on the fob and the barrell and there is no change really it still only works every other time i try. I have noticed that the lens on the fob is quite scratched, could this be the problem and if so could i just get another fob and put the chip out of mine into it or would this not work? thanks again roger

I do not think so they do work in a scratched condition,,you can polish the lens with T cut or brasso and try but I think that it will be a new key at the end of the day, and hopefully not the lock

Hi,
Thats not a bad price for the key, when i bought mine with a new key blade with VAT was just over £200.
Glad it sorted your problem out.

hi, yeah i think if my key had three buttons it would have been £200 with the vat but because it only has two it worked out cheaper and i also got the blade.
