Recently bought my CLA180, and generally the car is great (if a bit thirsty at times), but one issue I've had since I bought it is that niether of the two key fobs will lock/unlock the doors and/or boot. I guess that means it isn't be alarm protected either? The keyts start the car and I can drive it, I just have to use the emergency blade to lock/unlock the drivers door.

Anyway, the dealer I bought the car from (Non-Merc Franchise) tried replacing the batteroes to no avail and then said they'd spoken to their local Mercedes Dealer who told them the keys needed replacing (think this was verbally, not by diagnosing). So they agreed to pay for two new keys, I just had to do the legwork taking the car to Mercedes to order them.

So I took the car into my local Mercedes Dealer, who had the car a full day to 'pull the codes' required to order the keys. I took my V5 and driving license in, and they awaited payment from the franchise dealer before they could/would order the keys.

Longish story short, the payment was delayed and has only just been made over 2 week slater, so the keys remain un-ordered, but MB have asked me to take the car back in tomorrow to pull another code and they can then order the keys, which they say should only take a few working days to come from Germany.

However, the technician at MB said it was unusal for both key fobs to fail, and that suggested an issue with the car, not the fobs. I can only go off what the franchise dealer told me, and they have agreed at this stage to pay for new keys (at a cost of over £600 for the pair).

So now the question. Has this happened to anyone else,i.e both key fobs failing? If not, does anyone know what on the car may be at fault, and how much it could be to sort?

Cheers for an advice offered, but as above I'm taking it into MB tomorrow to pull another code, and I'll update once keys are received and if it sorted the issue.

Well, quick update - spent 1hr 40mins at MB newcastle this morning whilst they pulled the required code from the car, which apparently took so long as "someone had changed the software on the car" according to the technician, and this is why it took so long tio pull the code.

Anyway, fobs ordered (they will use existing blades), and they should be available by Tues-Wed next week.

Fingers crossed these sort the problem, and it isn't soemthing more 'on the car'.

A reason why I use Replacement Mercedes Keys in Birmingham.

Just over half that for two keys for the SL (MrsLK lost one and the other failed after a trip through the washing machine - apparently my fault as I'd left them in the jeans pocket of the pair I intended to wear next day that she decided needed to be washed).

A good few years back Emily decided to do some washing. She put a pair of my jeans in the wash along with a Smart key .... fortunately it survived!

Well, been down to MB to collect the new keys, and..... didn't work. Exactly the same as the ones I already had. Won't lock/unlock the car, but start it.

The technician said he told the dealer (that I bought the car from, and who were paying for the new keys) that in his 20-odd years, he'd never seen both keys fail together, and that he believed it was a fault on the car, but they told him to orders the keys anyway.

So MB have contacted the dealer again and told them it needs diagnosing, which they have agreed to book it in/pay for, so it goes back in on 24th to find out the real issue.

Meanwhile, I continue using the emergency blade to get in/out of my car,

I must admit I didn't think both keys would fail. So back to the dealers to have a look at the central locking control module.

At least the dealer is standing the costs of this. Bodes well for getting it fixed. Good luck.

Just updating this thread, and my issue has finally been sorted, and all of my key fobs now work to lock/unlock the car/boot (trunk), and the start/stop Ignition button works too.

To cut a long and arduous story short, it went into the Mercedes dealer for 3 days of diagnostics, where they also had my car 'in bits' (their words). Following this they determined the first thing to do was replace the rear windscreen at a cost of over £1000, but they also said that may not sort the issue, and it may then need something else.

At this point, the indy franchise dealer I bought the car from clearly baulked at the price and said they would have the car checked over by their own 'Independant Mercedes Specialists'.

Anyway, after an aborted booking, and then having the car for the last week, its all sorted and everything works as it should. I asked what was done to cure it, and he wasn;t sure but mentioned a 'module' and 'something else', and the cost was just over £600 all in. Not very helpful, but the car does still have its original rear windscreen, which Merecedes were going to replace as the FIRST option.

Pretty disappointed by the service from the main Mercedes dealer, in not seeming to be able to diagnose the fault, and apparently going for the most expensive 'fix' first. Also issues with their communication and keeping me informed about my car and how long things might take, but thats another story.

However I can't fault the dealer I bought the car from (Franchised MG dealer in South Shields, Tyne & wear). The have dealt with the problem, and even provided me with a free courtesy car all the time they had my car, to keep me on the road.

Now to really start enjoying my Mercedes CLA.

It's usually the amplifier that takes the signal from the aerial.
Very poor that MB went down the route of the windscreen. Most expensive and difficult to replace part first.
