Hi There ,

This is my first post on the forum - hope im doing it right..

Last week a privately bought a s320 on a W 2000 Plate.

Now I simply love the car but I Have a "Few Little" problems.

1) The Air Con is not Blowing out Cold Air

2) The electric mirrors dont adjust or fold in or out
(they flap about in the wind and shudder while im driving)

3) The SRS llight stays on for about 10 mins before going off on start up

4) Iv got a leak in my Window Washer tank and the Malfunction sign tells me its always empty even when It is full.

5) The " Airmatic - Visit workshop" displays on dash

Now Even with the above faults I still love my First S Class...

What Id Like to know is , Can anyone point me in the right direction reguarding the abive faults.
Id really like to try any simple things Myself , Fuses , Loose connections to remedy them before I spend more money at a garage..

Any advice is welcome and very much needed....

Im not a very mechanically minded person so please keep answers idiot Proof ;)

Welcome to the site.

This sounds like you have water in one of the front SAMs (control unit)

One of our most senior members on here had different faults on his SL a month back.

With a car like yours, having the fault codes read is the first move, other wise your go round in circles.

A few pointers:

1)The air con probably just needs a recharge (probably)

2)Hopefully a fuse.Failing that, maybe the control unit (does the seat memory work?).

3) & 5)Maybe a battery or charging issue

4)Headlamp washers are a common failure on 220 series.Fill the washer tank up & see if you can see it dripping. You can manually lift the h/lamp washers up & shine a torch down there.£40/£50 each off the top of my head.

As SAM I would find a good infie with STAR its a god way to start out, with the codes and what it tells you / us will help to make sense of the faults.

Re the mirrors keep the folding button pressed in either way to see if they engage to the motor gear

As Meanie do check / charge the battery to avoid starting blips

Hi

A ittle more info on my problem

Thanks so much for your reply..

Iv checked the Aircon readings using the REST button and they are : NR.00: +19.7 oC

Iv checked the Fuses for Electric Door mirrors and they appear to be "Dead" , No movement or sign of life. They also seem to shudder and shake whilst im driving quite a bit..

Also One more question... If u dont mind..

Iv noticed under the bonnet ( Passanger side at front Behind Light cluster ) that I have 2 unconnected cables , one Round 2 pin circular female socket , and one 2 Pin male connecter just hanging around seemingly doing nothing ???? Any idea what these could be..

Thanks again..

Matt

Sorry-lift the covers for the headlamp washers in the bumper & take a look down there.Did 3 for the lease company after the cold snap-not enough solvent to stop the washer water freezing.

I find that my electric mirrors seem to only work when the car ignition is position 2 and I have not started it up.
Assume you are trying them with the ignition on? Just a thought.
Oh, and by the way, if you physically push them in, you will not get them to pull out completely and they will rattle. Once electrically charged they do re-set. My N/s has broken lugs top and bottom of pin but still works. If touched, the thing does collapse somewhat.

Mirrors appear to be totally dead..

The mirrors do appear to be totally dead..

Iv checked the "right Fuses" I think ??

Can someone just confirm which fuses I should be checking and if there is any other reason why power aint getting to my mirrors ??

Matt?

Matt,

the "loose" cables under the bonnet are quite likely to be for electrical equipment that your car doesn't have.

They are all over the S Class. I am fitting front and back park sensors at the moment and did you know the wiring for all of the indicators units (dashboard and behind rear headlining) is all in place!!!

Matt?

Isnt there a chart of the fuses in your fuse box? On the W140 series its fuse number 30 and it operates the memory seats and steering adjustment. So, if one works then its a circuitry/ unit problem. Haven't nailed my own intermittant working.

As for the SRS light you will find many threads explaining the problem which is circuitry, and which I also have. I can live with the light taking time to go out.

Your mirrors are controlled from the door controllers The N69/1 and 2

Fuse 39 in the front box controls the right door module, fuse13 does the left side.
there is no separate fuse for the mirrors

Matt,

I have a couple of door controllers you can try if you want to eliminate them from the list of potential causes....

If the CAN system does not know that you have mirrors, then they will do nothing

A new acronym to me Malcolm and rather perplexing for my brain. Why did God make us all so unequal?

http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/may2007/techtips.htm

I have been playing with electronic since 1948, so its easy to understand for me. Gone are the days when you fitted a new spot light and a switch to turn it on. If you fit something to the car now, you must tell the car that you have added this, and with a little luck it will remember it, if you are not so lucky, it will forget, and no longer work.

Cars are getting like humans now, some make it though to a good old age, and others get things like Alzheimers and then you do not know what you have got.

Repeating myself, have you tried the mirrors when the Ignition switch is turned to position 2 but the car not started? This seems to work for me.

Fantastic Malcolm, that the subject still interests you after so many years and that you keep abreast of changes, even in retirement. As will be other members I'm extremely grateful the grey matter is still yielding boundless help and advice.
