I Am A New Boy, This Should Be A Simple One For All You Old Timers, I Have A 98 E300 T/diesel
What Should I Expect As Normal Running Temperature? It Seems Very Stable At Just Below 80, I Thought This May Be Low. Last Car Was C180 With 200k+ So No Experience On Merc Diesels

Hi & Welcome,
My 320CDI runs at just under 80 most of the time. There are a few 300TD owners on here so they should be able to advise on what theirs run at.

Do you know that you are the first one that I have seen in the last 12 months to ask that, I will check later for you.Petrol is 85-100 for the best combustion.

My 190D (2.5L 5 cyl om602 engine) ran at a tadge over 80c, I once saw it rise to 90c when I got stuck in traffic after a fast run.

My 300D (5 cyl om617) ran at 90c, which I thought was a wee bit high as I was used to the 190, rising to 100c on a fast run. I've since flushed the cooling system and it now runs at between 80c and 95c.

I think it's easy to get too worried about operating temps, as long as the gauge is somewhere in the middle (and I suppose more importantly not moving) then all's well. It's nice to be reassured as to what's normal though!

PS. Yours is the last (and thus most powerful) of the old fasioned bombproof Merc diesel engines, run it on veg oil and drive it forever!
