Hi all, I've just joined this list, so thanks for your help in advance.

I've just brought a C270CDI and I would like to install my Sony MDX65 Minidisc Autochanger using the standard Audio 10 CD head unit.

I've been told by some ICE dealers that this can't be done as the Audio 10 has an optical only connection, and that the only changer that can be fitted is the Becker 6 CD Changer.

I could also change the head unit, but I would loose all the steering wheel control functions, which I like.

Assuming that the Audio 10 has a standard Optical input like a Hi-Fi amp would have from a CD player, I'm hopeing to find an unit that takes the output from the MDX65 and encodes it onto an optical data stream suitable for the Audio 10.

Or am I just dreaming? :-(

I think you're dreaming. I wanted to do the same thing on my 2001 CD10 MB audio, but all the ICE shops I contacted said it was impossible. All the manufacturers have different digital protocols apparently. Even connecting a CD changer you need either the MB unit (which is £500) or the Becker and these seem to be difficult to get and aren't a great deal cheaper. The general opinion was that it was better to replace the head unit because for £500 you can get a better head unit AND a CD changer.

Chris,

What you've been told is correct, no accessory manufacturers make an interface adaptor for the Mercedes system it's either junk the lot, or use the factory fit options. The information came from a technical contact within Sony so I have reason to trust it.

In an effort to improve the sound quality I've fitted a MiniDisc head unit and foregone the autochanger which was already fitted when I bought the car. I've also changed all the speakers and the difference is considerable!

Good luck as just fitting the speakers made me realise how well screwed together these things are!

Alpine also do a lead for the steering wheel controls for £69.99 on that site above.

Thanks everyone for the useful replies.

It seems that Merc have got the upper hand there.

I'll have to look at a new head unit more seriously, maybe an Alpine one with the steering wheel adapter would be the best option in this case.

It's a pity as I don't really like the way alternate head units fit into the C Class dash.
