Had a quote from a Local tyre/exhust/Brakes garage that I goto for tyres ususally for new front pads on my wifes C200 (w202) V plate, the quote £80 fitted with a bit of a haggle. Now I have been told by others on this forum that this a a job I could do myself! Firstly is it worth it, how much are pads on there own? and also how the hell do I fit them? can anyone give me instruction? and how long should it take me to do? and what could go wrong?

Cheers

Discs pads

Yes went to have new pads fitted today, and just as I thought they said "You need new discs as well mate" they are apparently belowthe legal limit (discs) he has quoted mw £180 for new front discs and pads all in. So what do you recon is this an alright quote?

I think it will be a standard make etc, I am going to have them done by them regardless as I just need some breaks that work and are leagal. Just wondered if this seemed like a reasonable price?

this means thy will be a copy, at £40 max + pads = £80 parts.so £100 for two hours work, not too bad.

Dunno what car your talking about as you,ve not said but 2 hours seems a long time to me. I did my 202 front brakes in less time than this no more than an hour an a half and that was using the standard jack one wheel at a time.
Get them to change the brake fluid at the same time, makes a world of difference to the brake performance.

I didn't know there was a legal limit on disk's. I'd like to see how that would be policed. Manufactures shall give out a recommendation on minimum thickness of disc's. But that's news to me if it's past that recommendation it's illegal!

Merc Plymouth just charged me £299 for front pads and discs on my 2004 C Class. Had it done whilst in for a B service (£450!)

Only bit of good news was that they found a faulty track rod and replaced it FOC on warantee.

for instance on 140 400SE the min thickness is 27.4mm Ventilated

On the car here a C200 202 solid disc min is 10mm , ventilated 19.4mm
rear 7.3mm, pad thickness 2mm front and rear parking brake 1-2 notches.

Next please

Though the police can check tyres, they do not check brake disc,I can only assume that if you had an accident where one broke, then you could be charged with something.

The owner probably wouldn't be at fault, but if a car had been in for a service and it hadn't been picked up the garage may find themselves culpable if it could be proved beyond "reasonable doubt" that the wear that may have caused an accident - say brake disc failure - had not taken place since the car was last serviced e.g. on the way back home from the garage and even if it were longer there may be a charge of contributory negligence to answer especially is one of these ambulance chasing lawyer firms got a hold of it :-?

There is an endorsable offence driving a vehicle with defective brakes but i think that they have to prove the driver was aware of the defect and drove it despite the fault.
