I intend to replace the fixed rear side window rubber seals on my 1990 124 estate this weekend. I have the new seals already. There have been a number of posts explaining how to remove the rear windows but I haven't been able to find anything on installation. After removing the old seals and cleaning/treating the rust that is bound to be present, these are the steps that I think I need to take:-

1. Insert glass into new seal
2. Insert seal (with glass) into body aperture
3. Seal with glass to rubber sealant
4. Seal with metal to rubber sealant
5. Re-install frame

Have I got the sequence correct? Do I need two different sealants?
Can anyone recommend which sealant products to use, preferably available from my local Halfords, B&Q, Screwfix etc. If I need to get something mail order I would probably need to put off this for another week at least.

Thanks

David

I did my W124 a couple of years ago and used a trade windscreen sealant on both the glass and metal sides of the seal. Had no further trouble so seems OK. I would recommend that you use a silicone grease or plenty of Vaseline on the tongue and on the slot in the rubber for the trim piece otherwise it can bend. You are familiar with the 'string' technique for replacing windows?

Thanks for replying. Where did you get your sealant from? I have seen the string method but never done it. As with most things that pro's make look easy, in practice, I expect I will be at it for hours.

Sealant came from a motor factor, Halfords may well sell it. Remember that in the string method the strings cross at the top so you are pulling back against its direction. If you soap the rubber that has to 'jump' over the flange it makes things easier. Also you need a friend pressing on the outside of the glass otherwise the rubber can pop out again. Where there are tight turns to make a circular motion while you gently pull on the string can help. You may be surprised at how easy it is.

Good luck.:)

ps. a quick search on Halfords site shows they don't sell it. Dont be tempted into using a silicon product, it wont stick to rubber. Another outlet may be local bodyshop.
