Fixes for C Class Fuel gauge inaccuracy and mile display faults

Hi,

When I bought my C200K Sport Auto Estate W202 last December it had 2 specific faults.

The first was the fuel gauge would not read above half even when the tank was full, after reading threads I found that the advice was to replace both fuel senders as the resisteance wiper electrical contacts get coated up from the unleaded fuel.

This is not necessary! Simply remove the fuel senders and clean the contacts with the green side of one of those yellow and green sponges you use to use for the washing up before you bought that dishwasher. This is abraisive enough to remove the deposits but will not damage the contacts. Before refitting, I stripped all the parts in the sender (v.simple) and generally cleaned. I also checked to cleaning had worked by connecting the senders up to the car before reinstalling them to check the job had worked.

The second fault was that some of the segments in the LCD mile/trip display did not work. Merc will tell you this cannot be fixed and will charge you about £500 to supply/fit a whole new instrument cluster. If you have this fault and are technically competent/brave, you can strip the cluster down and all the fault was on mine was the ribbon cable to the mile display had become loose as there is a small piece of pink rubber that presses down on the cable and this was no longer pressing hard enough to maintain a good contact. I simply took the rubber strip out and put a thin piece of wire behind it in its retaining slot and pushed the rubber back in the to the slot where it now stood more proud. On reassembly the prouder standing rubber now exerts more presssure on the cable and the display works perfectly. A good test if you have this problem is to press firmly at the bottom of the cluster under the mileometer and see if the display changes - if it does then odds on you have the same fault. With a bit of patience you can save youself £500!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards

Nick

Well done that's the way to go. Had both these faults also (but fixed under warranty so replaced presumably) though the fuel gauge does seem to move quicker down the bottom half , always a disappointment! How have you gone on with the creaking/squeaking panels? Pollen filter always a good diy this time of year

To SeaGS, Nick thanks for putting up the first class post on both counts, Many people here will appreciate what you have done. The insrument cluster thread seems to be temperture related and we get many during the colder weather where the car has bigger temperture swings.

Thanks again for an excellent post.

Hi,

It is well explained in the Haynes manual.

To remove the fuel senders (there are 2!) you will need to drive the car until the fuel tank is nearly empty (light has been on for at least 10 miles) jack up the back of the car and remove the plastic covers that are held on with 3x10mm bolts. Disconnect the wiring plugs and use two small bolts in the locking ring holes and a bar across the protruding bolts to loosen the locking ring (this saves using the Mercedes special tool!).

Once the ring is unscrewed the sender can be pulled out and disconnected from the internal pipework. In true Haynes fashion - replacement is the reverse of removal.

Hope this helps

Hi Nick
I also have the problem with missing pixels on the odometer and trip counter.

what is the procedure for taking the instrument panel out? I do have the Haynes manual, but its not very detailed, I think!...

Do you need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery first for this work.
Thanks
Majid
