What does it take to install headlight flashing capability where it did not exist previously. Is it entirely dependent on the control stalk?

You could add the feature if you wished, just wire a touch stalk to the main beam relay.

Okay just to make sure should it not flash when you pull the indicator stalk toward you?

Yes it should flash when you pull the lever towards you, there could be a fuse for this function, other than that the back EMF in the relay burns the contacts in the switch.

Funilly enough this is the one and only thing that's not worked on my 202 230k since I've had it must get round to diagnosing it once the weather warms up so I'll watch this thread with baited breath;)

Hi,
If the high beam works when you push the stalk forward i would start by testing/replacing your stalk switch.
Try these people should have one on the shelf

http://www.mercman.net/

They do mail order too,
Alternatively look on e-bay as there are numerous breakers list cars for breaking.

Its a steering off job to replace the flasher, though the wires terminate in a plug under the wheel, I have no idea what wires go to what pins.

I have a sneaking feeling it may turn out to be the switch in which case it may stay as is because it's not an MOT issue and a multi function switch like that won't come cheap. I'll check it out sometime not having a full wiring daigram's a PIA never mind

£134 comes to my minid for the cost of this switch, could be wrong.

Its very bad practice not to have a cap over the contacts to stop the arcing as you release the switch

Will a brand new stalk not contain the switch? If so I have just bought a brand new one on ebay for less than £50.
