Can anybody help me please. I have a 2002 E220 CDI. Today the battery was flat and I got it jump started, I took it for a run and it will not change gear at all, I have tried using the tip auto gearbox, but nothing happens. THe battery was only 12 months old and the car has not been standing so I do not know why it went dead.

I am not sure if it is linked or a coincidence, but nothing has bee wrong with the car until it went dead.....

What I did do the day before was to thread an extension car lighter cable for my SAT Nav under the steering column and around the pedals etc. Is it possible that I have dislodged something there or is it all a coincidence.

Many thanks in anticipation of a reply.

low battery voltage can effect the gearbox. put a named brand battery on it.

At 6 yrs old it is probably on it's original battery, mine died at the same age. As per above put a decent battery on (Mercedes Commercial dealers can be reasonable ££ wise) and the autobox issues may very well go away. It is an electric box so needs the volts :)

For the sake of spending £5 on a digi meter and knowing if you have 12.5volts before you start, its a hard one.

You could disconnect and join up again with the key out of the car

Since no-one else has said it but its stating the obvious for some folk ... your car appears to have gone into limp home mode .... you'll need to get it reset. My ML270 did the same thing due to a duff battery but was fine with new battery and code reset.

A new battery will sort the problem, the ecu's are not getting enough voltage and as a result the car is running in limp mode. I assume you have the orange lights on the dash. Teh car will revert to normal once the battery is fitted.
