It is most likely that the cetral wire in the coaxial cable to the antenna booster in the C pillar has broken.

Prise apart the arial connector which plugs into the back of the radio and check that first. It is the most likely place for the aerial conductor to break.

A simple check and a simple soldering job to fix - just ensure that the earthed shield isn't shorted to the central wire.

Brandwooddixon thanks for your reply...but i dont have the foggiest idea of what your talking about ..lol

no the wire seems to be fine...when i got a mates signal booster (for VWs..on Ebay) it worked fine untill he let the booster go ..and left it hanging. the frequancy went again.

The amp booster is built into your car,,if it was OK before you started messing around you will have broken the wire inside the plug the goes into the receiver

No/very weak radio signal on all bands: 3 x FM +MW +LW

Hi All

I have a Sony Radio+CD+Tape unit (CR-C5300R) in my 2000 C230K and it has worked fine probably since purchased new almost 10 years ago. The CD and Tape work OK and every button function operates faultlessly. I even reset the internal processor and reconfigured it without issue.

However, during the last week the radio receiver has decided not to work. It's not dead, far from it, because if I wait long enough I hear faint transmissions which increase and decrease in strength. Mostly all I hear is noise. If I were to describe the symptom in simple terms I would say the radio has lost its connection with the antenna. I do not believe the radio receiver is faulty because it is trying to work but the signal is far to weak.

I have touched nothing so broken wires is unlikely. However, I am aware there is an antenna booster inside one of the C-pillers and this maybe at fault. I am wondering if this pre-amp is fused and whether that could have blown. If there is a fuse, where should I look? In which C-piller is the pre-amp, viewing the car from the rear?

Assuming the worst and I have to replace the antenna booster, how much is it likely to cost me and are they readily available from dealers?

With a little luck the loss of signal may just be an iffy connector problem and retightening it will restore the radio.

I like music when I drive so I am beginning to miss it. However, I have CD and tape to fall back on.

REGARDS

Phil

Hi-Fi unit fuse

Hi Malcolm

Presumably the rear windscreen heater doubles as an FM antenna so would the Hi-Fi unit share a fuse with the heater. It sounds unlikely but ...

Phils car is a 202 malc, it will be a 202024 i believe, i always believed the "c" piller amp was fed from the stereo itself, i will very interested in what you find as my radio reception though not lost is very weak in my C43.

Phil's motor IIRC is on a "W" plate, so it will be 2000 model (maybe a 1999 depending how long it was before it was registered) though 99-2000 should be the same.

Yes the amp is in C pillar,,on all of these things to test. Unplug the lead from the amp that goes to the radio in the front and tune into a weak radio station,,take a thin nail or pin and while standing outside the car touch the center connection,if the radio springs to life then put that plug back and take out the aerial lead from the amp and put the nail while still holding it into the center pin of the aerial socket,,if the radio springs to life, then the aerial is faulty,,if it is still poor, then the amp is US or a fuse has gone and I will check on the at now

If the lead to the radio is at fault,,you run the new one through the center console

I thought the Amp was fed from the stereo itself, so this maybe why there is no info.
