Evening all, Just a quick request for advice on a foot pedal parking brake.

I operated the pedal this morning and no ratchet! The parking brake still operates and the electronic release works ok so I'm thinking the ratchet has failed in some way.It looks like you remove the lower dash under the steering wheel to access the mechanism.I did'nt hear anything when I pressed the pedal. Can anyone offer some advice before I check it out?

Thanks, Gary.

Thanks

Let me have an Email address, and I can send the paper

Got the paper Malcolm and it's given me an idea of where the fault is likely to be.I'll check it out tomorrow and post my findings for others to reference.

Thanks again.

As promised, for anyone experiencing the loss of the foot brake ratchet, an update for reference.

The ratchet is one part metal and the other part is plastic. No prizes for guessing that the plastic part broke. The good thing is it cost just £1.51p to buy the part and the plastic pin it turns on.No problem fitting it, a couple of minutes and that was it! If you look at the inner side of the pedal, you can see the part and how it locates. No dismantling involved to get to the part so not a problem.

wasnt there a recall on this? we had dads replaced under warranty when it went at about 2 and a half years old. dealers said that the ratchet noise you hear inthe car wasnt for the brake, just owners peace of mind!!! as a consequence they said it wouldnt affect parking brake operation. the replacement part has given no trouble in almost 5 years, and (we were told) is a modified part as there was a recall on them (again, thats what they told us!)

Well, the replacement parts were the same as the broken ones and very cheap looking plastic too which probably means that they ARE just to make a noise for peace of mind rather than have a mechanical function in keeping the brake on.

Call ups are usually to improve something but if these parts are supposed to stop breaking then it's only going to happen if drivers don't apply the foot hand brake at all! The cost is'nt going to upset anyone and fitting is simple so overall just a mild irritation.

I can't understand why anyone would want to replace the pointless noisy ratchet mechanism.

As my car is a manual, I imagine that I use my parking brake a lot more often than a driver of an automatic. The noise always annoyed me. When it broke a few years ago I was delighted. No loss of functionality, but the silly noise was gone.

I will NEVER repair it.

IIRC the clicks are there to aide service/setting.
