Think some of the newest "Benz " have electronic parking brakes- The new A class has. The old foot operated parking brake very seldom went wrong--- if VW Passat owners are anything to go by its one of their most common breakdown faults. The exhortation "drive to your nearest Mercedes service station" will have a certain irony if the handbrake won't release.

And my local garage Graeme are full of car of all types with parking brake faults

yes, the brake shoes retaining mechanism with springs is a joke...

only just replaced my rear discs / pads as the calipers were sezied up, barely any disc being touched....

when I looked at what lurked behind the discs, i think I just laughed...

all sezied up & looked pretty poor.

Took me the whole day, as I did both sides, repaint the backing plate, and clean / paint the caliper carrier & the caliper itself...

so much better now, but the parking brake, is still only "marginally" better...

quite some force to press it, and I can easily drive off with it FULLY pressed down, but that's the engine for you lol ! :D

on a sidenote I used my homebrew to deactivate SBC correctly.

when it prepares to allow for maintenance, it fully depressurises the system, which got me thinking, that it's the ideal time to do a pressured bleed without using star, as 99% of the fluid will be swapped out.

it was interesting to see the values at each wheel, all have to be or above 50bar, each wheel value was almost 70bar and steady, so each wheel is seeing the correct force, although I should have checked to see what they were with seized rear calipers...

soz to detract from the thread ! But it's essential that the cable mechanism is given a good clean & lube, as mine was quite sezied & the adjusters were both pretty seized solid !

HTH :)

I think it was also intended to be used as an auxilliary brake to stop the car if all else failed. It brings me out in a cold sweat just thinking about it:shock:

Early Rolls-Royce cars had vacuum brakes that did not work well at coming to a halt speed. It was standard practice to use the hand/foot parking brake to finally stop the car.

What is this "handbrake" you are talking about? :D:D
The only time mine is ever used is for the MOT test and when on the ferry (as the blokes loading the car want it on) apart from that I never use it.

I can remember the handbrake on my dads old DS21, press the foot brake, pull the knob out under the steering column and it locked the brakes on via the hydraulic system, that was fine until someone decided to move the car without the engine running, it rolled down the road and nearly took the door off!!!!!
