For Sale or Not for Sale that is the question.

Why would a Smart dealer continuously list and advertise a car or cars that they either don’t have for sale or are not going to sell.

I’m Just very curious.

I can only assume to gauge and better understand the true demand for that specific model.

The dealer I refer to has listed three smarts ever since I started looking for one three months ago, a blue one, a green one and a white one, each time I rang he gave a different story about each of them on separate occasions, ie it had just been sold, it was waiting finance approval, it was being held for a long term customer, but each time the story had changed for each one, I just found it irritating to find that when I drove to the site he had none of them and had just wasted my time in phone calls and a visit to his premises when I could have been looking elsewhere, in fact the three smarts are still advertised to date.

I would vent that frustration direct with the salesperson face to face. I would also raise it with MB UK - deceitful to loyal customers bla bla so on.
Its just dishonest to say the least and very untoward

On one of my phone calls he gruffly said “I will let you know if I have one available” and hung up, he rang back a few minutes later and said he was sorry he was rude and blamed it on a friends pending wedding, I was not impressed.

I continued to ring a few weeks later looking like they had been unsold seeing that the cars were still being advertised, I received much the same confusing replies, the reason I persisted with him was because these were the only Smarts available at a local dealer.

In fact they are still being listed now! 3 months on.

The surprising thing is that they list themselves as a smart car centre and boast:

In the end, I lost faith with local dealers so I bought my Smart from Hanwell and had it delivered and I am thrilled to bits with it.

Similar behaviour used to infect the London property market. I would often find an agent's sign on a pole, cable tied to the railings outside our block of flats. All the flat owners knew each other and none of us were selling. We concluded it was to make the agent look busy and successful with a full book of properties.
Similar to yourself we got told all sort of bollox about the flat at that address having just gone, under offer, etc, etc. Oh, but we have this other flat elsewhere you might be interested in!
