Hi all, names Phase for Manchester, Just bought an 56 E280 Elegance 3.0 auto diesel, pick it up in a week.
Looking forward to reviewing DIY's to enhance what seems to be an already great car.

Another newbie here. Had my E280 for a couple of months now and love it. Have already cleaned it more times than i cleaned my old mondeo in ten years. The neighbours have all noticed and made the usual comments.
I had wanted one for years and after another old workmate went down with the big c the wife and kids said GET IT NOW so i did and i am so glad i did.

My heart just lost lots of beats............

My heart has just passed my groin to my feet.
My money worries have vanished ( Have no money now what I think is wrong with my E220).
I NEED HELP PLEASE................
I just started my Year 2000 E220 CDI CLASSIC Saloon Auto Diesel, 115220 miles, just to check it out, as I have not used it for a week.
All was well stated ok, after about 10 minutes I heard a sort of clicking sound like a loose drive belt pulley.
Bonnet up, all ok belt not loose, clicking sound still there.
Thought I start the air con as I have not used it for 3 month.
That’s ok, then........ all of sudden engine made a grunting sound slowing from normal tickover and smoke coming from the underneath at the back looking from the front of the engine right hand side.
I immediately turned engine off. Smoke still coming from underneath of engine, smell was like electrical and very noticeable. Torch no good to see where smoke coming from.
Let engine cool down a little, after 10 minutes tried to start engine. No start engine turned but very slow with should I have never hear before, no start, tried 3 times no start
That was it. Car in drive, locked gearbox, no start engine no get out of park position to move car.
WHAT CAN THE PROBLEM BE.....I ASK YOU ALL......
If it is the Autobox is it worth changing or scrap car.
I await your feedback PLEASE...........

Turbo, alternator? Just guessing, have a look in the daylight before panicking- could be something trivial.
