These types of code reader's and codes are only of use up to 1995.Even then it will only cover basic codes, and not all. The readers are a simple LED and a switch.

Yes, You are right Malcolm the website above lists only the pre 1996 fault codes.

All cars built after 1996-97 are suppose to have an on board diagnostis (OBD). While the parameters, or readings, required by OBD II regulations are uniform, the auto manufacturers had some latitude in the communications protocol they used to transmit those readings to scanners.

GM cars and light trucks use SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation). Chrysler products and all European and most Asian imports use ISO 9141 circuitry. Fords use SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication patterns.

more information on OBD can be found on http://www.obdii.com/

Mercedes-Benz Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) can be found in the table on the following website.

Hi there does anyone know how to find out which diagnostic protocol is for v220 cdi?

It depends on the design year, for new models built after 2000 you have the socket under the dash ODB11 for earlier cars you have the 38 pin socket in the engine compartment

Our car just wouldn't start one day after jump-starting from another car (which we have done before with np) and having scanned these forums most people say it's the ecu or immobilser - electrical spike during jump-starting. having phoned the mercedes garage for advice have been told that this is highly unlikely cause and probably just a wiring fault. To have it diagnosed at a garage would be upwards of £40 plus towing then repairs. Husband thinks it better if we buy our own diagnostics tool but all seem to say 'works on ISO .... or SAE .... protocols'. So just wondered how to find out which would be compatible with our car? thanks, sorry for the long winded explanation but we're kinda stuck:(
