- GLA 220D Sport 4matic 2018
I have just part exchanged my E Class 250 coupe for a GLA 220d 4matic.
I had the E class for 6 years and did 70k it was a brilliant car, fantastic mpg and performance. I could get 60 mpg maybe 61 on a run at 60-70 mph. At 207 bhp it when quick of the mark and was smooth and quiet when cruising. I had a couple of mechanical issues, the most worrying was a boost sensor which MB fixed but didn't fix so they fixed it again and it didn't last so that gave me my money back, put me in a courtesy car and took and week to fix it properly. There's a bit more to it than that but I won't criticise the dealership although they probably deserve some stick.
The reason I sold the car was because of low front and possible damage caused by high kerbs to the valance and wings. About a year into my ownership I spent a couple of grand replacing the NS wing after catching the valance on a kerb in Lidl and when reversing off pulled the joint between it and the wing. With the wings being aluminium there's no change of a skilled panel guy doing a repair. The remonstration with the manager at Lidl pointing out that his kerb was above the 5-1/2 inch British standard was always going to be pointless but it happen anyway. I did catch a few more kerbs but got away with it, you just can't keep on remembering not to park facing a kerb. I knew that sooner or later damage would happen again so with that and the need for a more practical load lugger, I started to look around. Well, once you start looking that's it, the marketing takes control and you're gonna buy one.
So the GLA is a much more practical motor, good ground clearance, decent sized boot with good access, the E Class was OK and had folding seats but the aperture was a bit restrictive.
The 22Od engine is apparently the same OM651 unit as the E Class 250 but tuned differently. Obviously it doesn't have the ride and refinement of the E Class and is sometimes noisier but nevertherless it's comfortable and goes well. The auto gear box has clunked a couple of times on pulling away, once when I slowed to almost a stop and then pulled way. I think I caught it on a gear change and the other when used the Hold function, best not to just give it gas but just give the accelerator a little blip first so it knows to disenable the parking brake. We're only a few weeks into our relationship so we'll how it goes.
