GLA 220D Sport 4matic 2018
I have just part exchanged my E Class 250 coupe for a GLA 220d 4matic.

I had the E class for 6 years and did 70k it was a brilliant car, fantastic mpg and performance. I could get 60 mpg maybe 61 on a run at 60-70 mph. At 207 bhp it when quick of the mark and was smooth and quiet when cruising. I had a couple of mechanical issues, the most worrying was a boost sensor which MB fixed but didn't fix so they fixed it again and it didn't last so that gave me my money back, put me in a courtesy car and took and week to fix it properly. There's a bit more to it than that but I won't criticise the dealership although they probably deserve some stick.
The reason I sold the car was because of low front and possible damage caused by high kerbs to the valance and wings. About a year into my ownership I spent a couple of grand replacing the NS wing after catching the valance on a kerb in Lidl and when reversing off pulled the joint between it and the wing. With the wings being aluminium there's no change of a skilled panel guy doing a repair. The remonstration with the manager at Lidl pointing out that his kerb was above the 5-1/2 inch British standard was always going to be pointless but it happen anyway. I did catch a few more kerbs but got away with it, you just can't keep on remembering not to park facing a kerb. I knew that sooner or later damage would happen again so with that and the need for a more practical load lugger, I started to look around. Well, once you start looking that's it, the marketing takes control and you're gonna buy one.

So the GLA is a much more practical motor, good ground clearance, decent sized boot with good access, the E Class was OK and had folding seats but the aperture was a bit restrictive.
The 22Od engine is apparently the same OM651 unit as the E Class 250 but tuned differently. Obviously it doesn't have the ride and refinement of the E Class and is sometimes noisier but nevertherless it's comfortable and goes well. The auto gear box has clunked a couple of times on pulling away, once when I slowed to almost a stop and then pulled way. I think I caught it on a gear change and the other when used the Hold function, best not to just give it gas but just give the accelerator a little blip first so it knows to disenable the parking brake. We're only a few weeks into our relationship so we'll how it goes.

Welcome,
Just FYI the 220 isn’t quite a detuned engine, the 250 had different injectors and turbo to get that higher BHP. That said remapping the 220 will give good gains and actually a better power delivery overall so very comparable to what you had with the 250

Welcome (after 6 years of membership!). I went from an E Coupe to a GLC a couple of years ago and have never regretted it. With the seats down, I got an amazing amount in it on a visit to the tip this week but it’s just as comfortable on a long continental run (when such things were allowed!).

I have a feeling (others can perhaps confirm or correct) that the A Class derivatives have a dual clutch auto rather than torque converter and that does need a slightly different driving style, particularly when starting off.

PS don’t forget to change your car details on your profile. Saves any confusion if you need help with any future problems.

Welcome, yes you have to be careful with high kerbs on the E class.
