Hi all

I cleaned my front ABS sensors (one of which was filthy) and the oversensitive ABS at very low speeds sympton was cured. After a run out on a wet day and a salty road the sympton has returned so I presume the sensors need cleaned again.

I want to clean the the "reluctor rings" this time too though. I couldn't get to them when cleaning the sensors though.

Can you get access to them by removing the brake discs?

Also I may turn the ABS off temporarily. Does anyone know how to do this? Can you turn it off by removing the ABS relays without doing any harm?

As far as I know the magnetic ring is built into the wheel bearing, double check to make sure that a sensor has not become dislodged
Did you have a problem before you started ?

the car should work OK with the ABS module removed, then you will just have normal brakes.

Malcolm - I managed to get to the reluctor rings after shining a torch through the hole vacated by the sensors. I cleaned them again and the rings this time and the ABS is working correctly. The ABS was cutting in under normal braking around town, due to the dirty sensors.

If the ABS starts being over sensitive again then I will disconnect it. Cheers.

Cleaning Reluctor Rings

Hi,

Can any one advice me on what materials I should use to clean the Reluctor Rings on my W210. My current situation is that the ABS light has illuminated on the dash when I removed the front wheel and the ABS sensor to clean them, which has attracted plenty of debris, I noticed through the sensor hole that the reluctor rings were totally gummed up.

you will have to remove the brake callipers and the discs for this, then use wet and dry paper to clean the unit. But I dont think this will solve your problem, try it first and see.

Since when do you remove the calliper and disc to clean the system.
A stick with a cloth on the end is all that is required for this, they are hall effect magnetic, not optical.

Other reasons, too much play in the wheel bearings, poor contacts on the pick up where it plugs into the ABS module. A faulty diode in the alternator or bad contact in the OVP relay are the most common.

I agree with you eric ,the reluctor ring spaces between the teeth, if gunged up with crud which is ferrous and hence magnetic, will cause the sensor to think wheel lock is present. This should be cleaned out. I had to use an old hacksaw blade to chip the deposits out after dismantling the hub.
