Just took my car for an MOT and Kwik-fit and they told me my front discs need replacing (its not part of the MOT but they noticed it apparently). Anyway just wondering if this is common (car has only done 106000) and if so what is the minimum thickness. It did see another post here regarding a 97 c200 but I would assume these brakes might be slightly beefier.

Thanks.

Are you saying you've got 106,000 mile out of one set of disks??

If so, you deserve an award of some kind. I have never seen disks make it past 50,000 miles and have reduced them to scrap in much less that that.

So I would say that you've done amazingly well.

is it that unusual?

Maybe its just MB put crap disks in their cars?? Over the years I have owned an Audi A4, Volvo 850turbo, numerous cars all of which I have topped at least 90k, and not once have I ever had to replace disks....this is my first MB.

I've done 110k in our 202

and I've just started on the third set of disks. and I am nice to them. What's your secret. Your'e not trashing a gearbox to avoid using the brakes are you?

You must be very gentle on them. I usually expect to get to around 50k miles before a change is needed - on the C43 it's less but then I use them a lot......

dont think I am gentle

Well not sure about being gentle, I definitely wasn't on my Audi, I used to go through tyres and pads at a terrible rate.:)

Well chaps I look at it like this:

If the discs last the pads won't,
and
If the pads last the discs won't.

On balance I prefer the discs to wear out at 50K, it's a lot cheaper than repacing pads every 15K.

As far as knowing when to change the discs, you can feel the lip on the outer edge of the disc and if it is 1mm plus deep your ready for a change. Of course you can get a micrometer out if your really fussy, the minimum thickness will have to be advised by the dealer, I don't think its in the handbook.

The significant point is whether the car is a manual gearbox or auto.

In the past the greater majority of Mercs were autos and as we all know wear their brakes much more quickly than manual cars, as the gearbox is often aiding the braking.

Since asbestos was taken out of pad material the discs now wear at roughly half the rate of pads. Discs are considered a consumable item nowadays.
My pads last 30-35K and Discs 60-65K
