suddenly decided to give up the ghost last night... all I got was a continual ker-thunk ker-thunk of the motor trying to open it, which only stopped when I pressed the button to "close". It had been operating very slowly for a number of weeks beforehand..

My first question is: has something inside just "come loose"?
Then, how easy a job is it to take the door panel off - I believe I have to start by gently prizing the plastic door handle backing off, but where are these three screws that hold the door panel on?

Any assistance would be really helpful.

thanks,

Starlite

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
The door card is held on by 1 small screw near the lock and 1 bolt next to the handle.
Gently pise the door handle backing off and the M6 bolt is at the upper end of the grab handle. There is a triangular trim at the mirror which has to be prised off (carefully)as well. lift the door card up about 1" and it will come away.

I think that you have some teeth striped off the quadrant in the window lift mechanism.
To get it fully closed grip the glass and lift it while the switch is held in close.
You may be able to mend the worn teeth by welding replacement teeth onto the quadrant, other wise its a fresh assembly.
Your note that the window was slow suggests that the glass is tight in the slides, and this can be cleaned up and re-lubricated once you get the motor and glass out.
Have a search around this forum its been asked before and answered fully.

Err, welding? replacing of teeth... help! I don't have any garage facilities... Might be quicker and safer for me to take it to my friendly Merc specialist...If I damage the leather door card, that'll be really expensive to replace... Thanks anyway guys
