Hi,

Have a 2010 mercedes CLC220.

A clicking noise has started from front nearside wheel area. Was very faint initially and now louder. The noise disappears making a left turn. The frequency increases as the car speeds up

I assume it is the bearing. The only thing that makes we question this is that there was no droning noise initially. Just went straight to a clicking noise.

Further question if I may. I would probably just replace the whole bearing hub rather than fiddle about with changing the bearing. Is this a common w204 part or is it particular to CLC?

Thanks in advance

Paul

The fronts are adjustable buddy , might be worth trying that first

Thanks.

I did try this. Before adjustment, there was about an eighth of a turn before any resistance in the turning of the nut.

Regards

Clicking is unusual for a wheel bearing. I'd be inclined to do as suggested and check tyre treads.

Whe you adjusted the wheel bearing you didn't do it up tight did you? There must always be a small amount of slack for Mercedes wheel bearings. They do not need preload.

Jack car up. Spin wheels see which is "clicking" Any noise from taper roller bearings not good remove hub, wash bearings, petrol or thinners. Inspect well any damage or burn marks, replace, half pack cone n rollers with correct grease, add 1/3 rd full grease to interior of clean hub, reassemble. Tight by hand (make sure) retaining nut threads are free. Back off 1 flat, or put wheel on with 2 bolts n loose bearing nut until play felt, retighten until play, just, gone. Fix origional retainers
. Unless ur real careful or lucky you will need 2 new front hub seals. Run car down road see if issue gone.

Thanks for all responses.

Back home at the weekend. Will investigate. One thing that I have now recalled is that when I took the (nearside) wheel off for inspection, I had to rotate the brake disc to get the right alignment to line up with the wheel nut threads when putting the wheel back on. Therefore at some point the small grub screw used to locate the disc to the hub has sheared. The front discs are new (by others). Wonder if this is relevant. Is the clicking related to sheared end of grub screw touching the hub? Initially no noise when car bought. Noise started after approximately 2000 more miles. Will check tyre for debris. I have also obtained a replacement hub and bearing to give a go. Thanks again. Will report back.

Redtify grub screw story. Tho once wheel on and tight disc going no where. Don't think that sourse of clicking. Also check disc back plate not toughing disc at any point

Ok, an update but later than expected, apologies. I put a new front left hub with bearings on and the ****** noise is still there! Also to eliminate the wheel itself I put the space saver on and gave it a run. No change. I am now wondering if it is anything to do with recent gearbox refurb? As a reminder, the noise started really faint and has got progressively louder. But the thing that makes me thinks it's something to do with the wheel is that the noise disappears when making a sharp left turn. As there is no drive shaft to the front wheels I am not sure what else that can cause a clicking at a frequency proportional to road speed. Mercedes ownership seems to be hard work at this rate. Meanwhile my 200,000 mile plus Citroen doesn't miss a beat! Any words of salvation gratefully received, before it goes off to an MB independent for assessment.

Is there any chance that this c model car can suffer from the rear foot brake cable breaking a cable clip and dropping onto the propshaft to make this noise ?
I know the CLK platform gets this issue .

Sounds interesting, fits in with the road speed frequency symptom.

Going back to the gearbox specialist guys for a look. Maybe something touching driveshaft after re-assembly.

I had a speed related clicking from the front right wheel, loose brake pads and slight runout on the disc.
