Hi i have just bought a m reg c180 benz and i must say its a very nice car,but i have one problem the wiper does not work?i have checked the fuse under the bonnet and that seems to be ok,but i see that it controls the main beam aswell,i say this because i cant use the flasher on the stalk either,if the lights are on then if i push it forward the main beam turns on,but if i pull it back then it does not flash?could this be the switch??or any other ideas would me much appreciated.

Hi,
If the fuses for the wiper and high beam are ok then i would have to agree with jibcl500 that its your stalk switch that is likely to be at fault.

I've noticed the forum timings to be incorrect, so later posts come before earlier ones.

The time now is 17:35, but the forum clock says 6:34pm.

Houston, we have a problem..

Maybe they have done this on the wiper thread to get a clean sweep for the new year

Take off the collar around the steering stalk . Have a look at how it all links and works. You might try some Rp 7 or wd 40 in the base of the stalk .There may be some moisture in there that you dont know about. If that dosent work having a look at the stalk parts will help to asses what you are looking for to purchase. Maybe a second hand one from a wrecker will suit.I would suggest this course. You may have to wait till the holidaybreak finishes

hi i have changed the stalk but still the wipers do not work?i discoinected rthe old one ond plugged new one in but did not undo steering wheel as thought this may be a big job,but wat i thought does the switch need to be earthed at all or would by just plugging it in make it work?

so now it must be the wiper motor as fuse is ok,so can anyone tell me how to change wiper motor (step by step if poss)as i wouldnt have a clue where to start

many thanks...

It is not going to be easy.I can tell you about the wiper assembly but i havent done a motor. You will have to unclip the plastic cover from the engine compartment side to get to the wiper arm assembly and frame. This will need to be done first before you start on the motor which if I recall was inboard of the firewall. The plastic cover will torment you near the centre of windshield area. You might have to break som of the clips. This has been the common experience. Be careful not to damage your fingers. Come back to forum once you have taken off the plastic cover and either I or some other member will guide you through the next step. Have you made the investigations suggested by Malcolm and are you sure it is the wiper motor.Once you take off the plastic cover we can determine if there is a failure in the wiper assembly or gear. Dek what do you think?

If the problem is the stalk, surely the wiper would work at least on one of the three settings i.e. intermittent/normal/fast?
So that leaves the fuse or relay, which I think is in boot, you should hear the relay click when someone turns the wiper on/of while you listen at the open boot.
Dose the motor make any noise when turned on?

EDIT; see also...http://members.lycos.nl/mbenz/windshield_wiper.htm...In the third picture in the link there is a connection plug, by unpluging it and putting power to it you wil be able to determin if the motor is o.k. or not.

In the front fuse box where the relays are there is a big black one,if i push on that whilst the wiper switch is turned on i can feel it clicking as though the wipers are on intematt, but no wiper motor does not make any noise at all?

I take it that you mean you have taken the “turtle shell” cover off? If so you can put it back on again as what you need to do now is gain access to the motor by removing the trim as illustrated in the link in my last post. Is the link opening for you o.k.?

When you have done that you will see the wiper mechanism and the motor attached to it. Coming from the motor wiring there is a 5 pin plug (3rd picture in link where it say “connector”…unplug it (be sure to unplug it)and lever off the top of this plug with a coin or screwdriver, you will see 5 wires, yellow, black, brown, green and white

If you have a spare battery or a battery charger put Positive + to the Green wire and Negative - to White wire, don’t touch the other 3 wires, if the motor works and sweeps the glass then the motor is ok and the problem must be elsewhere like the stalk. If the motor doesn’t work then I think it will need to be replaced.

Scrap yard is best bet, motor is held by 3 bolts and a ball joint on the motor arm.

Warning; KEEP YOUR FINGERS WELL AWAY FROM THE MECHINASIM.
