The front wiper blade needs replacing on 2001 E class. Is it easy to do and where can I get a replacement blade from please? I mean - will I have to go to the dealer to get one?
I agree with 'amb67', fitting a new blade can be fiddly if you have never done it before. I buy my replacement Bosch blades from Halfords but they are readily available from a wide range of retail outlets. The MB dealership will charge the earth for the part and probably charge for fitting. It's easily a DIY job.
One point not made is that you can buy the whole blade for around £25 (from memory) or just the rubber bit which used to be around a fiver. Plumped for the blade only option at a service thinking I was saving money - only to be charged £20 to change it!
Eurocar parts have Bosch ones very cheaply, my W124 was about £7. They are very good ones. It takes about 3 minutes if you have done one before. Put some thick towel between the arm and the glass. After dozens of blade changesin 30 years, I had one slip and the arm on a VW hit the glass, and the ping on the glass cracked and spread before me. Be warned. Its a very easy job. Take it slow, and protect the glass.
I, too, have heard of instances where the wiper arm came crashing down onto the windscreen causing it to crack. Use a towel or some other impact absorbent material to protect the windscreen.
Replacement should take about 3 minutes, or so, to unclip the old and install a new wiper blade + backing piece, according to instructions contained in my Haynes.
