Hello all,

First of all Ill apoligies, this is my first Mercedes!!
I have recently purchased my new car (about a month ago). Last week I was pulling out from a parked position with my indicator on, at which point it (my indicator) completely stopped. Ever since this happened My indicators (and the wiper on '1' setting) have worked intermittently. Its most frustrating , and quite dangerous a times. I have checked the fuse, to no avail.
Does anybody have an idea as to what are causing these problems?.

Thanking you in advance,
Yours, Slightly worried at a large bill, Directionless

Faulty indicator stalk possibly.... Sometimes removing the stalk and cleaning it and a quick squirt of WD40 might help.

Thanks

Jib, thanks for the advice

Im assuming its an easy task to do this?, i had a little poke around earlier under the steering column earlier- the stick seemed to be securely fastened.
I guess what im trying to say is that im a little worried about removing it, without causing more damage.

Thanks for the tip

If two systems on the car are controlled by one switch then it has to be the switch at fault, removal can be tricky, just look at what your doing make sure you have the correct tools for the job (kitchen knives etc) and think about what your doing, dont pull or force anything.
If its beyond your capabillity then get an indy to look at it for you, its not worth damaging anything trying.

With intermittent faults like this I think it would pay you to invest in a spray can of Electrical Contact Cleaner, take out all the fuses, spray the contacts and replace, even though they may look clean and firmly in place. Do the same with every relay switch you can find.
Not sure if yours is the same, but on mine there are several relays under the fusebox cover (6 s/t screws), and more behind the battery under the bonnet.

Removal of the indicator/wiper/lighting/horn multi switch is not a job for the uninitiated as the airbag and steering wheel have to be removed first, best left to an independent garage or if you are very well off a Mercedes dealer.
Of course if you feel competent, I suggest you buy a workshop manual and carry on observing the precautions re. airbag systems.
Geo.

Intermittent electrical fault

Hi

I had a similar fault on my 95 C250. Symtoms were,

Wipers, Radio, Airbag warning light, sometimes working, sometimes not.
I pondered this for about a week, then realised that all these things are on the accessory position on the ignition switch. I took off the cover under the steering wheel to get look at the ignition switch and found that the switch part was not clicked properly onto the body of the switch. Clicking it back into place (towards the steering wheel) cured all faults. The only thing I now find is that the airbag light stays on for about 60secs after start up, instead of about 3 secs.

Hope this helps
Peter

You say you have checked the fuse, but it would still be a good idea to clean all the fuse contacts, especially any that are out of sight, as it is such a simple job and will cost nothing. Some would advise you to replace all the fuses - chances are that the fusebox has not been touched for 10 years. I say this after paying £59 to an indy to fix a fault, only to find the fault (plus others) had returned the next day. Replaced a (non-faulty) fuse and hey presto! - all faults gone.

Indicator/ Wiper Fault

I have the exact same fault on my E200. Indicators do not work or Wipers on turn one. I have noticed that the will work on a bumpy road. Is this a loose connection fault somewhere??? Please help hand signals really are not me!
