Sounds about right to me. Remember, its heavy so it takes a lot of energy to overcome the initial inertia and get it moving. I'd consider 25 pretty good for a petrol motor round town, I saw as low as 16 in my old E class, though it also did 38 on a long run. Its all about inertia (why they never made a C140!) and how much it uses stuck at idle - the bigger the engine (and a 1.8 is only small in Mercedes territory), the more it's going to drink in a jam.

The fuel consumption sounds about right, also remember that we are in winter now and the consumption higher. I get the same from my two petrol cars 2.3 and 3.2liter.
I think the figure you are getting is the one quoted for the urban cycle in your handbook.

w123 280Ce

Sorry to jump on the band wagon.

I have a 280Ce W123 1984. I only have as short trip to work 5 miles.

At moment I appear to be getting only 10mpg maximum, may be less, on this type of driving.

This of course can be explained by very short, stop go journey, weather etc, but is this similar to experiences of other owners / users.

Thanks

I'd think so.
We had an '80 250 and an '84 280E and 20mpg was the best we could expect from either, and that was on a run. Remember MPG wasn't a big issue when these were new. If its just stop-start, queuing type driving in cold weather, rarely getting over 15mph, 10 doesn't sound too far out of the way to me.
As a student I borrowed the 280 for a week, (my escort was in bits again). After 3 days I handed it back to my dad and caught the bus. Lovely car but it was drinking the stuff faster than my grant cheque could put it in!

I'd bet your short journey is also knackering the engine as it's probably not getting up to temperature is probably idling for long periods and generally washing the bores with petrol. Go the long way round to work and enjoy the experience for the car's sake!

Thank you for input.

Indeed I am trying to drive it on a longer less stopping route.

I appreciate it isn't doing it too much good and so trying to save car for the weekend and give it a nice run. Bus during week!

well - all the above posts make me feel a lot better about my 1991 300E - 24v fuel consumption! Anywhere between 20 and 30 mpg, depending upon weather, commuting into the city, commuting to a town (20 miles away) etc - and on long runs 30+ is not unusual.
What did have me worried was the range of consumption I was experiencing - your posts have reassured me!:D

Driving style has lot to do with it. I can get a wee-bit over 30MPG from my V8 S420 on local highways, but it does an abysmal 12-15MPG around town in stop and go traffic. On the other hand, I have often got around 50MPG from my 190D 2.3 with a manual tranny. I guess 25MPG for a c-class is not too bad. Make sure your tire air pressure is good and it also helps to have new air-filters, O2 sensors etc. I have also experienced a noticeable decline in MPG if I use a low grade fuel.
