Same way as any, actuate pump and measure the fuel pressure. What problem are you having

Loss of power In second & third gear around 2000 revs, a retired mechanic as said its a common fault on sprinters of this age?

Low fuel pressure causes a cut out on common rail engines. Suggest your fault is elsewhere, probably a boost leak.
