Fuel for W126 500sel

Will my 1987 V8 run happily on unleaded, or should I have the valve seats modified?

I have run my 500SEC very successfully un UL fuel. I was told that the aluminium V8's were designed to run on UL since most went to the US where UL was used far earlier than in the UK. SS valve seats came standard on aluminuim cylinder heads. Hope this helps.

My old 84 500SEC & my current 88 560SEL ran/run happily on UL.

The label inside the filler cap lid will say (from memory) something like Super auch Bleifrei - Super, also Unleaded - if MB intended it to run on unleaded.

There is also a black rounded switch in the engine compartment from which you choose what kind of fuel u are using...
