My fuel gauge sometimes goes crazy and flickers from one extreme to the other, regardless of whether tank is full/half full/quarter full
ANyone have had simlar problems?
Fuel sender unit is common, but you can remove it, leave it plugged in and invert it slowly with the key on and check the "stroke" or the sender whilst looking at the gauge.
If it is less stationary than when your driving, pull out the cluster, you'll see the fuel gauge unit is connected to the circuit board by copper type lugs.
Remove the gauge from the cluster, carefully clean and apply some CRC type penetrant to prevent corrosion build up.
I've had this on my 944 Porsche, W123 280CE and my W126 500SEC.
It's fiddly and be careful not to get fingermarks on the perspex or dial facia's.
