Fuel gauge needle has gone beserk??

Hope you can help me again ..

Using the car yesterday (98 c240 espirt estate) and the fuel gauge goes beserk. When I start the car, it goes all the way round to the temp gauge rather than point at the scales??

Is it something expensive to fix?

Is it the fuel gauge needle itself? It still moves back to the proper postion when you switch off. Just goes "off the scale" when you start it.

Or is it something to do with a part in the tank? (rang a merc shop this morning).

Can anyone recommend a good Merc specialist in Bucks or Berks? I am in Slough.

A cheap thing to try first is to put STP Injector Cleaner into the petrol? (250ml if I recall correctly) tank and fill up, if there is no improvement after a 100 miles or so then the other alternative is that the fuel sender in the tank is faulty.
