fuel gauge on merc 450 slc

Hi;

My fuel gauge showed eratic readings for a while ; Then it ran at half tank for a while; then shows empty all the time.

I know there is fuel in the car.

Could it be the sender unit in the tank or some loose connection behind the fuel gauge.

please assist with your suggestions

for those interested.

I removed the fuel transmitter; the rod on which teh float travels was dirty with sludge.After cleaning it. works perfect.

Becareful teh wires are very delicate.

Fuel Gauge Problems

Sounds like another car that would benefit from regularly adding fuel injector cleaner to the fuel tank. I know this works for the C and CLK class fuel gauge problems and would probably prevent the gunge building up on your sender units in the future.
