fuel problem

Hi folks,i have a 1988 300e which has started to what i can only describe as over fueling. The car starts up ok but quickly starts to misfire and run erratically.The revs on tickover start to drop, the car puts out black smoke when revved and when i check the plugs they are sooty and wet with fuel.The car's mpg has dropped to about 10 mpg and It has become almost impossible to drive because it cuts out at low revs. Any ideas about what the problem might be. when this happened on my 123 they replaced a small alliminium can on the bulk head but I cant remember the name of it, someone else must have had the same problem

Hi, was it the idle control valve, this is an aluminium cylinder with 2 rubber hoses and 1 electrical connection on it. Thanks, Jim

Sorry for delay

I think so,it was 3 to 4 cm diameter x 10cm long, it did have 2 hose points and 1 spade, it was a long time ago, it was in Sweden and minus 40 with no garage,and the only thing that I did not do myself. Interesting thing was, a large service could not find the problem,
but everyone in the street knew what it was. Sorry for delay I miss read your reply. Malcolm

Enrichment Device

One day I will wake up, it is of coarse an enrichment device, when it goes the fuel stays to rich. It always amazed me that they ran at all like it.
